The Shotokan of England Karate Union (SEKU) was founded in 1982 and has grown to become one of the most respected Karate Associations in England.

These three experienced instructors have been training in Karate for a combined total of almost a century!

Sensei Mick Dewey is a former national and international competitor.As its name implies, SEKU practices Shotokan Karate.

The most popular and widely taught of all the styles of this martial art.Karate in the form we know it, originated in Okinawa and Japan. The name is formed from the two Japanese words - Kara, meaning 'empty' and Te, meaning 'hand'.

Thus this art of the 'empty hand' shows that the practitioners are conventionally weaponless although using the armoury of their own bodies.

SEKU holds regular training courses and grading exams both for clubs and, quarterly, for Black and Brown belts across the whole organisation.

Two tournaments are staged each year, the first usually at the end of March is the SEKU annual championships and is 'in house'. The Portsmouth Open Championships are held in November each year and is, as the title suggests, an open championship. In both of these tournaments the traditional 'Shobu Ippon' rules are employed.

Squad training sessions are held for competition and point scoring techniques at various courses, the team attend selected tournaments up and down the country throughout the year.

SEKU also provide Instructor classes and referee/judges courses during the year.
